If you’re one of the poor unfortunates who’s not already totally in love with comedienne Sarah Silverman for her “Fucking Matt Damon” video and her totally awesome Comedy Central series “The Sarah Silverman Program” here’s another opportunity to fall head over heels for the funny girl. Silverman has come out with a new video to promote “The Great Schlep” (TGS) which is a political movement that:

“Aims to have Jewish grandchildren visit their grandparents in Florida, educate them about Obama, and therefore swing the crucial Florida vote in his favor. Don’t have grandparents in Florida? Not Jewish? No problem! You can still become a schlepper and make change happen in 2008, simply by talking to your relatives about Obama.”

The Great Schlep

The concept is pretty simple, younger voters who tend to be Barack Obama supporters, talk with their older relatives in key states in an effort to swing more votes Democratic. Personally I tend to hate talking to anyone about certain subjects (religion, politics) but have a special aversion to talking to family about the subject; still Sarah’s video is so hilarious I find myself actually thinking about it. Silverman suggested talking points include mentioning mutual love of track suits, Obama’s circumsupersion and how people with odd names shouldn’t be afraid of other people with odd names.

The comedienne points are a little different than those proposed by TGS however. Some points suggested for discussion by TSG include:

Barack’s Biography Obama’s life story of achievement through education and hard work is one Jews can relate to.
Foreign Affairs Obama has expressed a willingness to talk to any nation without preconditions but with appropriate preparations. This is the kind of smart, but strong, diplomacy that led Israel to a peace treaty with its strongest enemy, Egypt.
Patriotism His love for the United States is similar to that of generations of Jewish immigrants, who love America for giving them an opportunity to succeed when they worked hard enough.”

Citizen Sugar

Actually Sarah’s video is so funny that at first I didn’t even realize that this was a real movement. But it’s a grand way to get awareness out about the need for people communicate about the election, with those they care about (even if the election itself has become so much more than a laughing matter lately). Though Silverman’s video did leave me with just one more question – where are all the funny Republicans?
